Wi-Fi QR Code for Guests: Setup and Safety Tips

· 5 min read · generate-qr.cc

“What is the Wi-Fi password?” is one of the most common questions in any café, rental or office. A Wi-Fi QR code answers it for you: guests point their camera at it and join the network in one tap.

How a Wi-Fi QR code works

The code contains the network name, the password and the security type in a standard format that phones understand. Modern iPhones and Android phones read it with the normal camera app and offer to join the network. It works offline and nothing is stored on any server.

How to create one

  1. Open the Wi-Fi QR code generator.
  2. Enter the network name (SSID) exactly as it appears, including capital letters and spaces.
  3. Enter the password and choose the security type. Most home and business routers use WPA/WPA2.
  4. Tick “Hidden network” only if your network name is not broadcast.
  5. Add a frame such as “Scan for Wi-Fi”, download and print.

Test the code with an iPhone and an Android phone before you print it. A single wrong letter in the network name is the most common mistake.

Keep your network safe

Anyone who can see the code can join your network, and anyone who scans it can read the password. That is fine for guests, but your own computers, cameras and payment terminals should not share a network with them.

Where to place it

Static is the right choice here

For Wi-Fi, a static code is ideal: it works without internet (the guest is not connected yet), it never expires and it is completely free. If you change your password often, it is easiest to keep the code file and print a new one when you change it. More on the difference in static vs dynamic QR codes.
