Static vs Dynamic QR Codes: Which One Do You Need?

Every QR code generator asks you to choose between static and dynamic. The choice matters more than it looks, because it decides whether you can fix a mistake after printing, whether you can see how many people scan, and whether the code can ever stop working.
Static QR codes
A static code stores your content directly in the pattern: the full web address, the Wi-Fi password or the contact details. The phone reads it and acts on it without contacting any server.
- Never expires. There is no server in between that could be switched off.
- Free and private. Nobody records the scans.
- Cannot be changed. A typo or a new link means printing a new code.
- No statistics. You will never know how many people scanned it.
Dynamic QR codes
A dynamic code stores a short link, such as generate-qr.cc/r/abc123. When someone scans it, our server counts the scan and forwards them to the destination you chose. Because the destination lives on the server, you can change it at any time.
- Editable after printing. Change the link, fix a typo or point it to this week’s menu.
- Scan statistics. See scans per day, country, city, device and time of day.
- Extra features. Password protection, pausing a code, link pages and social pages.
- Depends on the provider. If the provider shuts the code off, it stops working.

Which one should you choose?
Choose static when the content will never change and you do not need numbers: your Wi-Fi password, a vCard on a business card, a link to your homepage. Choose dynamic for anything printed in large quantities, anything that might change (menus, promotions, PDFs, event pages), and any campaign where you want to know if it works.
Rule of thumb: if reprinting would cost you money or embarrassment, use a dynamic code.
The catch with “free” dynamic codes
Many sites create dynamic codes by default and switch them off when a free trial ends, after you have already printed them. That is the most common reason QR codes suddenly stop working. Before you print, check what happens to your codes if you stop paying.
