Do QR Codes Expire? What Actually Happens

· 4 min read · generate-qr.cc

Short answer: a QR code itself cannot expire. It is just a pattern of squares. What can stop working is the thing the code points to, and that depends on whether the code is static or dynamic.

Static QR codes never expire

A static code contains your content directly: the web address, the Wi-Fi password or the contact details. As long as the code is readable, it will do exactly the same thing in ten years. The only way it stops working is if the website it links to disappears.

Dynamic QR codes can expire

A dynamic code contains a short link to the provider’s server, which forwards people to your destination. If the provider stops forwarding, the code stops working, even though nothing changed on your printed material. This usually happens when:

How to tell which kind you have

Point your phone camera at the code and look at the link it shows before opening it. If it shows your own website or your Wi-Fi details, the code is static. If it shows a short link on another domain, it is dynamic, and it depends on that service.

How to make codes that keep working

  1. Use a static code for anything that will never change.
  2. For dynamic codes, read the provider’s terms: what happens to your codes if you stop paying?
  3. Keep your own website addresses stable, and add a redirect if you move a page.
  4. For important print runs, keep a note of where each code points and who manages it.
